A Brief History of the Syrian Sahwa: Timeline of Events

It seems that the Syrian civil war is entering a new phase marked by a heightened level of internecine fighting among opposition groups – especially between the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS; الدولة الإسلامية في العراق والشام) and more “moderate” Islamist organizations in northern Syria. Over the next few days I will be exploring the phenomenon of what is being called the Syrian sahwa, or revival – a confusing reshuffling of alliances that has taken place in the past few months as the working relationships among armed opposition groups has gone from tenuous to openly hostile.
